How to split your screen in Windows 11 (Snap layouts)

Last updated: · By the DeskHowTo editorial team
Quick answer

Press Windows key + Left arrow to snap the current window to the left half, then pick another window to fill the right half. Or hover over a window's maximize button (or press Win + Z) and click a layout.

You can also drag a window by its title bar to the left or right edge of the screen until an outline appears, then let go.

Applies to Windows 11. Snap is on by default; if it doesn't work, see the settings section below.

Split screen methods

Keyboard (fastest)

  1. Click the first window.
  2. Press Win + Left arrow (or Win + Right arrow).
  3. Windows shows your other open windows on the empty side - click one to fill it.
  4. Press Win + Up or Win + Down on a snapped window to move it into a quarter of the screen.

Snap layouts

  1. Hover the mouse over the window's maximize button (top right), or press Win + Z.
  2. Click the zone where you want the window in one of the layouts (2, 3 or 4 windows).
  3. Pick windows for the remaining zones.

Drag and drop

  1. Drag a window by its title bar to the left or right edge (or a corner) until you see a transparent outline.
  2. Release, then choose the other window.
  3. In newer versions, dragging a window to the top of the screen shows a snap layout bar to drop it on.

Resize and use snap groups

Drag the divider between snapped windows to resize both at once. Windows remembers the arrangement as a snap group: hover over an app in the taskbar and choose the group to restore all of them together.

Snap isn't working

Go to Settings > System > Multitasking and make sure Snap windows is On. Expand it to enable Show snap layouts when I hover over a window's maximize button and when I drag a window to the top of my screen. Some apps (or apps with a fixed size) can't be snapped.

Split across two monitors

Use Win + Shift + Left/Right arrow to move a window to the other monitor, then snap it there.
