How to take a screenshot on Android

Last updated: · By the DeskHowTo editorial team
Quick answer

On most Android phones press Power + Volume Down together for about a second. Some makers use Power + Volume Up (less common now).

On gesture navigation, many phones also support a palm swipe or 3-finger swipe (Samsung/Pixel settings vary). Find the screenshot in Photos / Gallery > Library > Screenshots.

Android skins differ (Pixel, Samsung, Xiaomi). If buttons do nothing, check your maker's gesture settings.

Capture a screenshot

Button method (most phones)

  1. Open the screen you want to capture.
  2. Press Power and Volume Down at the same time briefly.
  3. Tap the preview to crop, share or edit.

Scrolling screenshot

  1. Take a normal screenshot.
  2. Tap Capture more / Scroll / Extend on the toolbar if your phone shows it.
  3. Scroll to include more content, then Save.

If buttons fail

  1. Ask Google Assistant: take a screenshot.
  2. Or enable gesture screenshots in Settings > System / Motions (path varies).

Where screenshots are saved

Usually Pictures/Screenshots or DCIM/Screenshots. In Google Photos look under Library > Utilities/Screenshots.

Work profile apps

Some work profiles block screenshots - that is an admin policy, not a bug.
